Australia Visa: What Indian Applicants Need to Know

Every Indian passport holder needs a visa granted before travelling to Australia — there is no visa on arrival, and India is not eligible for Australia’s ETA (subclass 601) or eVisitor (651). For holidays, family visits and short business trips, you apply online for the Visitor visa (subclass 600). The Australian Government charge is AUD 250 — Around ₹17,970 — and most applications from India are decided in 2 to 3 weeks.

What decides an Australian visa is not a points score or a minimum bank balance. A case officer reads your file and forms one judgement: are you a genuine visitor who will return? That is why two applicants with identical balances get different answers — and why we review your documents against that test, free, before you spend AUD 250 on a government fee that is not refundable if you’re refused.

Fly For Holidays has been filing visa applications for Indian travellers from Mumbai since 2016. If you’d rather not manage the paperwork yourself, our Australia team handles the whole application — talk to an Australia visa consultant in Mumbai.

Australia Visa Fees For Indians Fly-For-Holidays

Government fee verified 18 August 2026 against the Department of Home Affairs. AUD 250 is the binding figure — the rupee amount depends on the exchange rate and your card’s markup on the day you pay. Government fees are not refunded if your application is refused. Confirm the current charge on the Department of Home Affairs website before applying.

Australia Visa fees for Indians in 2026

The Australian Government charges for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) are AUD 250 for applications lodged from India — approximately ₹17,000. This charge rose from AUD 200 on 1 July 2026. There is no separate VFS or biometrics fee for most Indian applicants. You pay the government in Australian dollars inside ImmiAccount, so your bank adds its own foreign-currency markup of roughly 2–3.5% on top.

If you have seen ₹10,500, ₹15,263 or AUD 190 quoted anywhere — including on older pages of this site, which we have now corrected — those figures pre-date the 2026 increase. At today’s rate, the government charge alone is over ₹17,000, so any “all-inclusive” total below that is either using a stale exchange rate or leaving the government fee out.

    • Passport valid 6+ months beyond travel, with two blank pages, plus all old passports
    • Bank statements — last 6 months, bank-stamped
    • Cover letter — purpose of travel, itinerary, who is paying, ties to India
    • Travel itinerary — flight and hotel reservations (hold them; don’t buy non-refundable tickets before approval)
    • Copies of previous visas and entry stamps, if any

    Then add your income evidence:

    • Salaried: 3 months’ salary slips · approved leave letter naming your return date · Form 16 and ITR for 2 years
    • Self-employed: business registration/GST · 3 years’ ITRs · 6 months’ business bank statements
    • Retired: pension statements · fixed deposits and investments · sponsor’s letter and income proof if a child is funding the trip
    • Student: bonafide certificate · school leave approval · parents’ ITRs, bank statements and sponsorship letter

The document that decides most borderline cases is the cover letter — not the bank balance. It has to explain why this trip, at this time, and why you’re coming back.

Australia Visa Application Process for Indians in 2026

China Visa Process at Fly For Holidays

Most Indian visitor visa applications are decided within two to three weeks. The Department of Home Affairs publishes no guaranteed timeframe, and processing varies by individual case. Apply six to eight weeks before you travel — and longer between September and December, which is peak season for Indian applications.

      • Determine the Visa type: First, you need to determine the type of Australia Visa you need based on your travel plans, duration of stay, and purpose of visit. For tourism / visiting family, you will likely need a Australia visitor Visa from India (subclass 600).
      • Gather the required documents: Next, you need to provide all the required documents for Australia Visa for Indians to our visa experts at Fly For Holidays for your Australia tourist Visa application for Indians, such as a valid passport, travel itinerary, financial proof, employment proof, and health and character certificates.

How to Apply for Australia Visa for Indians: The Ultimate Guide 2026 Australia Visa Application Form

You’ll receive a written decision naming the criterion you failed. Read it before doing anything else — the reason determines whether re-applying makes sense. The most common grounds for Indian applicants are insufficient or inconsistent financial evidence, not satisfying the genuine visitor requirement, and incorrect or omitted information.

      Refusal reason

      What it usually means

      What to do

      Insufficient funds evidence

Balance too low for the trip described, or a sudden unexplained deposit

Wait 3–6 months, build a clean statement, re-apply with the trip properly costed

      Not a genuine visitor

The officer wasn’t satisfied you’d return

Strengthen ties evidence and sharpen the purpose. Resubmitting the same file fails the same way

      Inconsistent documents

Contradictions between the form and the evidence

Fix it and explain the inconsistency directly in the new cover letter

      Incorrect or omitted information

      Undeclared refusal, wrong employment details

The most serious. Take advice before re-applying

Visitor visa refusals decided outside Australia generally carry no merits-review right, so re-applying with a materially stronger case is usually the practical route. Review rights and time limits vary by case — confirm your own position with a registered migration agent (MARN).

We handle re-application cases regularly. The honest conversation is always about what needs to be different, because your second application is read alongside your first.
